What is a blog?

You have probably already heard the word "blog" before and you may have an idea of what a blog, but you will find that opinions may differ greatly, and some time to better understand and clarify what you are about embarking point, is always a rewarding experience.

The word blog is a contraction of "web log", a phrase not very widely used today. In the simplest definition of the term, then, a blog is a journal of your thoughts, ideas, useful links, photos, videos, or the latest news.

Two years ago, Robin Good asked members of the public and fellow bloggers "What is a blog?" And collected the answers to a series of videos entitled The Weblog project, and opened the film for anyone to remix and share. This is one of those mixtures Robin Results:

"Technically, a blog is a series of messages listed in chronological order. Most agree, but they are an important form of expression. A "post" is simply another way of saying entrance, as an entry in a newspaper, or a column in a newspaper.

The posts are actually arranged in reverse chronological order, meaning that when you visit a blog on the Web, the latest story appears at the top of the site and previous down below, in order, by the date on which they been published On the web.

Deborah Ng goes on to define the common characteristics of a blog:

* The posts have header or subject - as a newspaper article, or e --

* They then have a topic or agency - the main part of the job, once again, just like an e-mail

* They are generally reviews - so that readers can react to what has been said. This is an important part of blogging, which is much more conversational than the written press. As soon as you write something, your readers will have a chance to respond to it

* They quite often a time and date - so that readers know how the post is new. Commonly people are not interested in reading obsolete posts. Blogging is very much a "time" phenomenon, and while you might create "evergreen" content, it is likely that at least some of your messages are time sensitive.

More Problogger.net Darren Rowse has collected a little more definition of a blog. It proposes, among other things:

"A blog is a website in which items are posted on a regular basis and displayed in reverse chronological order"
